World Teachers Day 2014
Sunday October 5th, 2014 celebrates the 20th anniversary of World Teachers Day. As with many other celebrations these days social media is responsible for spreading the news about the day of recognition for teachers across the world and the team at Box Clever wanted to do our part to share the news. As a member of the education technology community we wanted to honour all of the teachers that made a difference in our lives with a simple, yet poignant, photo campaign.
“We wouldn’t be who we are today without the teachers who moulded and shaped our lives along the way. We just wanted to say thank you the best way we knew how, over the web” said Box Clever Owner Chris Mebs.
The day is in commemoration of the adoption of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recommendation concerning the status of teachers in 1966, a recommendation that is morally binding for all countries. The biggest challenge facing many countries is the teacher deficit, with an acknowledged shortage of 1.4 million teachers worldwide. On top of an overall teacher shortage is the issues of quality. In many countries across the world teachers work with little to no training or the resources needed to perform their job to the best of their abilities.
This year’s day of recognition theme is “Invest in the future, invest in teachers” , quite timely for our province of Alberta, as newly appointed Premier Jim Prentice recently released his mandate letter to the Minister of Education, Gordon Dirks, detailing his orders to implement a plan for long-term, predictable funding.
Today we salute all of the teachers who work tirelessly everyday to teach the leaders of tomorrow and those that taught us to become the people we are today. You can join in the celebration too by using your own social media outlets and tracking all of the online activity using the hashtag #WorldTeachersDay.
Thanks again teachers for all that you do, all that you've done, and all that you will do in the future!
